Sachsenring MotoGP: Marc Marquez on pole as Dani Pedrosa crashes

Pedrosa had held provisional pole for much of Q2, but fell at Turn 1 on his final bid.

Just after he did so, dominant championship leader Marquez deposed him - and then found another two tenths of a second to make certain of a seventh 2014 pole with a record 1m20.937s lap.

Pedrosa held on to second, as local hero Stefan Bradl made it an all-Honda front row on his LCR bike.

Friday pacesetter Aleix Espargaro had to settle for fourth. The Forward man was the quickest of the Yamaha contingent, with works men Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi sharing row two with him.

Both Espargaro and Bradl had initial spells on provisional pole before the factory Hondas surged forward.

Bradley Smith was on course for a top-six start before his fourth crash of the weekend left him behind Andrea Iannone and Pol Espargaro in ninth.

Neither works Ducati had made the automatic Q2 cut on practice times, and though they initially held first and second in Q1, a big crash at the high-speed downhill Turn 11 on his final run left Cal Crutchlow 15th on the grid.

Dovizioso was only second behind a flying Nicky Hayden in Q1, but managed to beat Yonny Hernandez to the second progression spot by 0.007s, with Scott Redding also within 0.032s of making Q2.
