125cc: Talmacsi wins shortened race

Reigning 125cc champion Gabor Talmacsi took his first victory of the year in a shortened, breathtaking Dutch TT at Assen

In an incredible last lap of the second, five-lap race, the Hungarian Aprilia rider snatched the lead and beat home seven other riders who all finished within a second of the winner.

The first race was interrupted when a short burst of rain hit the track after only nine laps had been completed out of the scheduled 22.

Before the red flag was shown several riders crashed, including leader Bradley Smith, Efren Vazquez from fourth place, and Marc Marquez from sixth.

Race control then announced that the restart would take place some 25 minutes later, but with a five-lap sprint to help prevent delays to the rest of the program.

The grid order of the new, shortened race was based on the last lap completed in the first one, with Smith on pole, followed by Nicolas Terol, Joan Olive and Vazquez on the front row, the latter not taking the restart after the earlier crash.

The second row was composed of Simone Cortese, Marquez (also a non-starter), Stefan Bradl, and Andrea Iannone, with the next row comprised of Simone Corsi, Esteve Rabat, Talmacsi and Mike di Meglio.

Terol took the lead from Smith at the first turn, but the Briton carried on dropping down the order through the first lap of the restart and found himself seventh by the end of it, while Talmacsi was up to fifth.

But by the start of lap two Olive was in the lead and maintained it all the way to the beginning of the last lap, when he was challenged by Corsi.

While the two were fighting abreast down the straight early on the last lap, they were both overtaken by Talmacsi, but all three were outbraked by Rabat, who took the lead and looked set for the win.

But with just a few corners to the finish, the Spaniard went wide and was overtaken by Talmacsi and the rest of the leading group.

It was a breathtaking finish with Talmacsi taking the chequered flag first with a winning margin of 0.128 seconds, followed by Olive, Corsi, Cortese, Smith, Rabat, di Meglio and Iannone completing the top eight, just 0.928 of a second behind the winner.

The start of the first race saw Smith making a perfect getaway from second on the grid to take the lead from pole-sitter Corsi, who dropped to 19th position during lap two.

Smith managed to open a comfortable lead of 3.6 seconds over Terol in second after just seven laps, two laps before the race was stopped.

The first race saw Joey Litjens and Jules Cluzel crash together on lap one, Sergio Gadea's Aprilia breaking down on lap two, and Randy Krummenacher crashing on lap three.
