125cc: Corsi takes narrow home win
Aprilia's Simone Corsi won a breathtaking home 125cc Italian Grand Prix, tying for the lead of the championship with Derbi's Mike Di Meglio
The 20-lap race, held in sunny conditions, saw a pack of seven riders still battling in the space of the same second at the last lap, with Corsi taking the lead under braking at the start of the final lap and maintaining it by a mere 0.019 seconds over Aprilia's Gabor Talmacsi.
The Hungarian, who looked able to overtake Corsi on the last lap, was instead passed by Derbi's Pol Espargaro, who however could not fend off Talmacsi on the long Mugello straight and had to concede second place by just 0.017 seconds.
Di Meglio, who led more laps than anyone else, had to be content with taking fourth spot away from Aprilia's Bradley Smith, just half a tenth behind.
The Briton, who suffered a fracture in the foot in a qualifying crash yesterday, made his way slowly through the top ten. At the beginning of lap 18 he jumped from fourth to take the lead from di Meglio, but after leading for two laps he had to concede top spot to Corsi at the start of the last lap.
The Aprilias of Sergio Gadea and Nicolas Terol, who finished in sixth and seventh respectively, were still just over eight tenths behind Corsi at the finish flag.
Simone Cortese took eighth spot, followed by Joan Olive and Stefan Bradl rounding up the top ten.
Considering that the Derbi bikes are just re-branded Aprilias, it's worth nothing that the Italian manufacturer took the top 12 positions in front of its home crowd, with KTM's Raffaele de Rosa being the first non-Aprilia in 13th spot.
