125cc: Simon beats Smith to Qatar pole

Julian Simon started his return to 125cc in style by taking pole position for the Grand Prix of Qatar

The Aspar Aprilia rider, who has gone back to the lower class after spending two seasons in 250cc, ended up with a time of 2m06.974s, beating team-mate Bradley Smith to top spot by 0.133 seconds.

The Spaniard and the Briton exchanged quickest times for the final 15 minutes of the 40-minute single qualifying session, after top spot had been held by Andrea Iannone's Ongetta Aprilia.

The Italian was thus forced to settle for third spot, over six tenths behind Simon, and two tenths ahead of Nicolas Terol's Jack & Jones Aprilia.

The second row of the grid will be headed by Ajo Derbi's Sandro Cortese, followed by Sergio Gadea's Aspar Aprilia, Stefan Bradl's Kiefer Aprilia and Pol Espargaro's Derbi.

Marc Marquez on Red Bull KTM and Jonas Folger on Ongetta Aprilia round up the top ten.
