Moto2: De Angelis takes provisional pole

Alex de Angelis grabbed a last-gasp provisional pole position for the 250cc Italian Grand Prix on Friday, to prevent a fairytale result for Australian Anthony West

De Angelis left it until the final seconds of the wet session to put in his best lap, with West having been quick throughout the 45 minutes.

In fact, West had been dominant in the very wet early stages - setting times that were several seconds clear of his rivals. And despite a series of strong challenges from more established stars, a last minute lap from West appeared to have secured him the top spot before de Angelis' late effort pushed him down to second.

Andrea Dovizioso set the third quickest time, with runaway championship leader Jorge Lorenzo down in fourth after a fairly low-key run through the session.

Hector Barbera, who had been vying for the top spot through the session, ended up fifth, ahead of Thomas Luthi and Alvaro Bautista.

Despite the wet conditions, the session was pretty much incident-free. The only rider to come off was Marco Simoncelli, who slid off his bike on his first lap out of the pits. The Italian was able to return to his garage, however, to take the spare.
