Toronto IndyCar: Simon Pagenaud leads Penske 1-2-3 in practice

Simon Pagenaud topped an incident-packed second IndyCar practice on the streets of Toronto to lead a 1-2-3 for Team Penske

After a largely clean first practice, the second session featured a handful of incidents that curtailed much of the running, before the championship leader's final lap put him on top.

First Juan Pablo Montoya clipped his Penske Dallara-Chevrolet on the inside wall at Turn 11, spinning him into the outer wall to cause the first red flag.

Then just five minutes later practice one pacesetter Sebastien Bourdais spun into Turn 1, but avoided collecting the wall, followed by Mikhail Aleshin who suffered a sweep of oversteer to leave him stranded at the exit of the same corner.

The Russian, who had been quickest for most of the session having set a 1m03.2752s lap early on, narrowly avoided the wall, and managed to return to the pits untroubled.

The race stewards announced the 45 minute practice would be extended by five minutes in light of the disruptions, but it was largely unnecessary when Charlie Kimball shunted his Ganassi Dallara-Chevrolet at the exit of Turn 11 to bring the red flags out again.

Once the debris from his car was cleared a 12-minute sprint was left in which Bourdais, Scott Dixon, Will Power and Helio Castroneves traded the quickest laps.

Pagenaud eventually ended up on top with a 1m01.7081s lap - 0.2010s ahead of Castroneves. Power had to settle for third 0.3s adrift of team-mate Pagenaud's time.
