New safety regs announced
The Indy Racing League has announced new chassis regulations designed to make the cars stronger and safer from 2003 onwards
The drivers are to be moved further back in the car and the front bulkhead increased by three inches. Stronger materials will also be used in an attempt to reduce the likelihood of foot and leg injuries like those suffered by Davy Hamilton last year.
"The new generation of IRL cars will be the most technically advanced in terms of construction and driver safety ever to be used in open wheel oval racing," said series president Tony George. "Through cooperation with our manufacturers, we will be able to introduce this new equipment next year while adhering to the league's principles of strict cost controls."
Efforts will also be made to improve the wheel-restraint system. In a bid to stop wheels flying off after high-speed crashes, the mounting points will be integrated with the chassis and the overall weight of the car reduced to lessen impact mass.
