Moreno to stand in for Carpenter

Vision Racing have confirmed that Roberto Moreno will fill in for the injured Ed Carpenter at this weekend's St Petersburg street race

Carpenter was knocked unconscious and suffered bruised lungs when his crashed car was hit by Paul Dana's Panoz in the Sunday morning warm-up at Homestead-Miami Speedway last weekend. Dana was killed in the accident.

IRL medical officials have not cleared Carpenter to drive this weekend, and instead veteran racer Moreno, who tested for the team at Homestead's road course earlier this week, will substitute.

Moreno, 47, was a consultant to the team last year and helped set up the car for Carpenter during testing at the Infineon Raceway and Watkins Glen road courses.

"Yesterday's test was good," Moreno said. "I impressed myself and how quickly I got into the pace. IndyCars are quite tough, but I suddenly realised how quickly I was able to rely on my experience to get the car up to the pace.

"It is very tough to replace a driver and it is very difficult to just jump in a car and drive. I was glad to be able to get in the car a little bit already this week. Plus, road racing is what I know so I hope that get the car up to speed quickly this weekend and get good results."

The Brazilian is still seeking sponsorship to race in May's Indianapolis 500, and possibly the other two road course races on the IRL schedule.

"My ideal situation for the rest of the season is to find a ride for Indy and the other two road courses," he said. "I've been seeking sponsorships and meeting with teams to try and be able to do that."
