McNish enjoys Penske test

The Scot, who was forced to miss the last grand prix of the Formula 1 season after crashing in qualifying in Japan, enjoyed the experience, which was organised by Penske's new engine supplier, Toyota.

"So far, I've enjoyed it quite a lot," he told Racer magazine in a break between sessions. "I've enjoyed it more than I thought I would, in reality. And I've got a feel for the information the car is giving, and also what the changes we've made to the car are doing." He added that he felt no after effects of his Japanese crash.

"I'm pleased by the speeds we've been able to run straight away. Considering it's the 2003-spec lower engine revs, and all the other rule modifications they've made to try and slow the cars, I think I've adapted to it well."

While no times were officially released by the team, McNish was reportedly up to speed very quickly in the day, despite it being his first taste of an oval. "The most nervous moment of the running was on the first actual run," he admitted. "I didn't know how to do it, where to go, or what to look for. Rick Mears took me out this morning and showed me what to try and do to get acclimatised to it."

McNish still has no firm plans for 2003, but he still has hopes of being able to remain in Formula 1. He is also high on the wanted lists of sportscar teams for both Le Mans and the ALMS.
