Lloyd to miss first qualifying weekend
Alex Lloyd will sit out this weekend's qualifying sessions for the Indianapolis 500 after his heavy crash in practice yesterday
The reigning Indy Lights (formerly Indy Pro Series) champion was kept in hospital for observation overnight after making heavy contact with the Turn 1 barrier during Friday practice.
He was set to be released with a clean bill of health this morning, but will not return to action until practice resumes next week.
Lloyd is attempting to make his first IndyCar Series start in the Indy 500, driving a Rahal-Letterman Racing entry run in collaboration with Ganassi.
"It's a real shame for Alex because he was running very well," said team boss Bobby Rahal.
"He's been cleared (medically) so we'll just get ready to qualify next weekend with him."
The 23-year-old Briton will now have to fight for one of the final 11 spots on the Indy grid in next weekend's final two qualifying sessions.
The top 11 positions will be decided in today's six-hour session, with positions 12 to 22 allocated tomorrow.
