Four leading Indy Racing League teams have intensified their preparation for 2003 with two days of testing at the Homestead Motor Speedway in Florida, with both Honda and Toyota's new motors in action.

The test saw Penske driver Helio Castroneves and Ganassi Racing pair Scott Dixon and Tomas Scheckter testing Toyota's IRL engine, whilst Andretti Green racing tester Dan Wheldon continued development work for Honda. Both Japanese manufacturers will enter the IRL for the first time in 2003.

Andretti Green team manager Kyle Moyer said: "We just want to get a lot of miles for Honda and us. We're new to the series, except for Indy, and we're also working with Danny to learn more about him. Michael [Andretti] and Dario [Franchitti] have been taking some time out, but right now, they're both antsy to get back in."

Infiniti Pro Series champion A.J. Foyt IV was also in action at the test, driving for grandfather A.J. Foyt's team. The young driver caused the only major incident of the test when he spun and hit the wall in turn four. Foyt IV was taken to hospital for observation, but was not admitted. An inspection of the car revealed that the accident was caused by a suspension failure.

"Everything was going good until something broke on the car coming out of [Turn] Four," said Foyt IV. "We were running good times compared to everyone else, which sort of surprised me since out motor had over 300 miles on it. We're planning to get back on track tomorrow and just get some more miles in."
