Kanaan cleared to race after fire
The Indy Racing League has confirmed that Tony Kanaan has received medical clearance to compete at Kentucky this weekend after sustaining minor burns in a pit fire at Edmonton
Kanaan's car was enveloped in flames when the refuelling hose failed to shut off correctly at the end of his first pitstop. The fire was put out by crews from neighbouring pits.
The Brazilian's hands were bandaged as a precaution afterwards, but checks this week have revealed that he only suffered superficial first degree burns to his face.
"I need to thank the crews of Ganassi and Penske and Panther. It was amazing how quickly they responded and I am glad I'm okay," Kanaan said.
"It looked a lot worse on TV than if you saw me right now. We have great people working for us, the firesuit, helmet and gloves worked fine and I'm glad nobody was hurt. We just have to move on."
Two crew members who was also taken for checks at the medical centre following the incident were also cleared to continue work.
