IRL boss buys team
IRL founder Tony George, owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is to become a team boss for the first time in the history of the ten year old series after buying cars and equipment from Kelley Racing boss Tom Kelley. Ed Carpenter, George's stepson, will be driving for the new team.
Kelley, who ran the team from 1998 until closing the doors at the end of last year, acknowledged the deal, telling speedtv.com: "We're in the process of getting everything finalized and I'm happy to have this deal done. Tony is also going to run the team out of our shop in Indianapolis."
Carpenter had a troubled debut in the series driving for Eddie Cheever last year, crashing six times over the year and bringing home a single top ten result (8th, Kentucky).
The new team, which is yet to be named, is believed to be running a Toyota powerplant in its Dallara chassis. Veteran engineer Tim Wardrop has been signed to work with the 23-year-old driver, along with former Tony Stewart team manager Larry Curry.
The IRL season opens at Homestead, Florida, on March 6.
