IPS report: Carpenter wins at Indy
After a rough start sent two drivers to Methodist Hospital on Saturday, the first support race in the 87-year history of the Indianapolis 500 ended Sunday with Ed Carpenter, stepson of Indy Racing League founder Tony George, finishing 14s ahead of everyone else

Carpenter consistently turned laps 5mph faster than his closest competitors to easily win the rain-delayed Freedom 100 Infiniti Pro Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Driving A.J. Foyt's car, Carpenter checked out from the field and cruised to victory in the historic race. Afterward, he talked about his boyhood dreams of racing at the speedway.
"This speedway has been part of me every day of my life," he said. "I used to drive past the fourth turn on my way to school every day. There hasn't been a day that this track hasn't either been in my eyes or in my mind. It's just a thrill to win my first race here."
Cory Witherill finished second, out-dueling Mark Taylor to win by 0.12 seconds. Jeff Simmons was fourth, Jonathan Urlin fifth ad Aaron Fike sixth. All were barely within sight of Carpenter.
"Carpenter was just gone, but it was a good race for second," Witherill said.
Taylor, who won the first two Pro Series races this season, maintained his series points lead over Thiago Medeiros, one of the two drivers hospitalized after Saturday's wreck-filled start. Medeiros was released Saturday after treatment of a knee injury.
The other injured driver, O'Reilly World of Outlaws sprint-car star Craig Dollansky, underwent surgery on a spinal fracture. IRL officials said doctors indicated Dollansky would fully recover from the injury and that his mobility would not be affected.
