Iowa to host an IRL race
Iowa Speedway will host an IRL IndyCar Series race in 2007, league officials told the Indianapolis Star on Thursday
The 0.875-mile speedway, which is currently under construction near Newton, Iowa, will be located along Interstate 80, about 30 miles east of Des Moines.
Iowa Speedway is expected to be completed in time to hold races in September. It will have 25,000 permanent seats.
League officials did not say if the possibility of unification of the Indy Racing League and Champ Car World Series might affect the Iowa track's date on the 2007 IRL schedule.
Leaders of both sides have been in negotiations to bring the two series together, perhaps as early as next season.
Rusty Wallace has played an integral role in the design and promotion of the Iowa track, which will open September 15-17 with USAC sprints, midgets and Silver Crown cars along with USAR Hooters Cup Pro Series. An ASA/ARCA doubleheader is scheduled October 14-15.
Track officials are also expected to pursue NASCAR Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series races in 2007, although no decisions have been announced.
