IndyCar Texas: Carlos Munoz takes maiden pole position

Carlos Munoz claimed his maiden IndyCar pole ahead of Saturday night's Texas Motor Speedway race

The Andretti Autosport driver's two-lap average of 217.137mph earned Honda's second pole in two events after James Hinchcliffe's Indianapolis 500 effort.

As a relatively early runner, Munoz faced a long and nervous wait before his pole was confirmed.

Chevrolet drivers Scott Dixon and Helio Castroneves came closest to usurping him and will start second and third for Ganassi and Penske respectively.

Takuma Sato produced his best oval qualifying performance in five years - and his best anywhere in a year - to place his AJ Foyt Racing Dallara-Honda on row two alongside Castroneves.

Josef Newgarden was briefly on provisional pole before Munoz's effort and fell to fifth, ahead of championship leader Simon Pagenaud.

Detroit race two winner Will Power and morning practice pacesetter Tony Kanaan will share row four.

Juan Pablo Montoya struggled in the fourth Penske entry and was a puzzled 17th, just in front of Detroit Saturday winner Sebastien Bourdais and ex-Formula 1 driver Max Chilton.

Gabby Chaves sat out qualifying as Dale Coyne Racing continued to work to repair his car following his crash at the start of the morning session.

He expects to be able to run in the night practice that takes places later on Friday evening.
