Hornish wants more records

New IndyCar Series champion Sam Hornish Jr feels he still has plenty to achieve in the championship despite wrapping up a third title at the weekend

The Penske driver is the only multiple champion in the series, and this year also achieved his dream of winning the Indianapolis 500.

"There's always something new around the corner, and I want to pile up as many records as I can," said Hornish.  "I feel as you accomplish the next thing, you keep moving forward."

The American is considered an oval specialist by many of his rivals, but he wants to prove he is a complete driver by improving on the road courses that have been added to the schedule in recent years.

"I can't think how next year can be any better than this, but guess the next big thing on my list, outside of winning Indy again, is to figure out how to win on a road course," he said.

Hornish has been linked to a switch to NASCAR, but team boss Roger Penske insisted that the main focus will continue to be open wheel racing.

"We're fully committed to a full Indy schedule next year," said Penske, "but I think it would be good for Sam to run some Busch of ARCA races to see if it is something he really wants to do."

Hornish also believes he could use track time in other cars to help him improve on road courses.

"It would be nice to sometimes try to do a couple one-off races here and there and see if I can even be competitive," he said.

"There's possibilities to get some seat time, and not only on ovals but also a little bit on road courses."
