Herta and Barron qualify
Bryan Herta recovered from a crash on Saturday to qualify his car for the 88th Indianapolis 500 during Sunday's second day of qualifying for the May 30 race. His four-lap average of 219.871mph was the fastest of the day, securing the 23rd starting position
Herta wasn't the only driver to recover from a crash and get into the field Sunday. Alex Barron, who put his car in the wall in the waning moments of Saturday's pole qualifying session, will start 24th in the race after Sunday's four-lap average of 218.836mph. Felipe Giaffone also recovered from a crash to put a car on the grid.
Tora Takagi also booked his spot in the show, grabbing the 26th position with a four-lap run of 214.364mph. Rookie Marty Roth was the only driver to practice last week who has not yet put a car in the field.
Herta sustained abrasions on his right leg after the Andretti Green Racing Honda-powered Dallara spun and hit the wall on Saturday. Because of the abrasions, Herta was not immediately cleared to return to the track. On Sunday, he did.
"I was scared, but I guess that's the difference," Herta said. "When I first came here in '94 and '95, I was a rookie. Now, coming back to this race and this track, I've been through a few crashes before. I knew what it would be like coming back from yesterday."
Practice for the 500 resumes on Wednesday.
