Grapevine: Franchitti receives Indy 500 prizes
Dario Franchitti got a cheque for $1.6 million and a pie atop his head during the victory celebration for the 91st Indianapolis 500 on Monday night
Shortly after Franchitti was presented with the cheque, teammate Tony Kanaan surprised Franchitti by smashing a pie on top of his head.
"This isn't going to hurt, is it?" Franchitti said, anticipating the prank.
The $1,645,233 prize did not match the 2004 record of $1.76 million received by Buddy Rice, but the total purse of $10.67 million broke the record set in 2006.
Franchitti thanked his team, family and friends, then shared an emotional moment in addressing his dad, George. "We've come a long way, haven't we?" he said.
The Andretti-Green Racing driver won the rain-shortened race by staying ahead of Scott Dixon and Helio Castroneves during a series of caution periods shortly before rain began to fall for the second time. The race had earlier been interrupted for three hours because of rain.
Dixon earned $719,067, while Castroneves received $646,303. A two-time winner, Castroneves congratulated Franchitti on the victory. "Welcome to the club, my friend," he said.
The purse is comprised of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indy Racing League, sponsor awards and other designated awards.
Phil Giebler was named the race's Rookie of the Year for his 29th-place finish, while Kanaan received the Scott Brayton Driver's Trophy, presented since 1997 to the driver who best exemplifies the character and racing spirit of the late Scott Brayton.
