Gil de Ferran Q&A

Gil de Ferran has made a full-time switch from CART to the IRL this season after Roger Penske decided that the oval only series was a better bet for his sponsors. Last year Gil followed team-mate Helio Castroneves home on the team's guest appearance in the Indy 500, and this season he has proved to be a frontrunner, although a first win in the series has escaped him. Now all eyes are on Indianapolis, where Team Penske has such an impressive record. Adam Cooper spoke to Gil about his season

"Yes, I'm quite happy. Certainly we're having to work quite hard to understand everything there is to know about this new IRL thing, but things have gone OK so far. We've been to four tracks, and had four competitive runs. We haven't won a race yet, but we're right there."

"Just knowing the different circuits and understanding what you need for each little track. We're not too familiar with them. It's a little bit here and a little bit there, I guess."

"They are different but at the same time similar. The cars are very well adapted to be running on the little ovals, and they're actually quite good fun. It's kind of difficult to set them up sometimes, because even though you only go to ovals, there are many different types of ovals."

"Some tracks are flat, but difficult flat, so they're not easy!"

"Absolutely I do. Not that I don't enjoy what I'm doing, but for sure I'll always love road racing, and hopefully I do some more at some time in the future."

"Well my future is probably with Penske Racing. In fact we kind of renewed our relationship for the foreseeable future, so my future is probably with this team."

"I think that should be the way for the future, anyway."

"I think Chris Pook has been a good addition to CART, but I still think everybody would be better off if the two championships would be running together."

"The funny thing is that in this championship you always have your focus on Indy as well as the championship itself, so it's a little bit different from CART from that standpoint."
