Giebler completes rookie test
The same seven drivers took to the track for a repeat performance of Sunday's opening day during the second day of rookie orientation and veteran refreshers Monday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Michael Andretti again had the fastest lap of the session -- 40.6176 seconds (221.579 mph) -- while completing 43 laps in the No. 39 Andretti Green Racing Honda/Dallara. Ryan Briscoe had the second-fastest lap -- 221.427 mph -- in the No. 12 Luczo Dragon Racing Honda/Dallara.
Andretti, who passed his refresher Sunday, used the extra track time Monday to get comfortable in his car and help the other four AGR drivers -- Tony Kanaan, Dario Franchitti, Marco Andretti and Danica Patrick -- establish a baseline setup.
"I was real happy," said Andretti, who finished third in last year's race behind Sam Hornish Jr. and Marco Andretti. "We worked with the car a lot to get comfortable. It was easy to get back up to speed, but comfort is another thing. It was good to have this extra day to get everything feeling the way we want it."
Davey Hamilton, whose comeback from severe leg injuries began with his refresher Sunday, returned to the track Monday to run 36 laps in the No. 02 Vision Racing Honda/Dallara, with a top speed of 220.214 mph.
Phil Giebler completed his rookie test in the No. 21 Playa Del Racing Panoz, then shared the car with teammate Jaques Lazier.
Milka Duno and Jon Herb also recorded laps Monday, with Duno turning 74 laps in the No. 23 SAMAX Motorsports car, which began its career four years ago as a member of Mo Nunn's stable. The car, which SAMAX purchased from Hemelgarn Racing, most recently was raced at 2006 in St. Petersburg by P.J. Chesson.
For most, including Lazier, Briscoe, Hamilton and Andretti, returning to a race car after short or long periods of inactivity isn't a big deal.
"The initial feeling comes right back to you," Andretti said. "You know you can get up to speed quickly, but the actual comfort takes a few laps to get to. It takes some time to get to where you can actually relax and trust the car."
The entire field is set for practice Tuesday, the first of four full days of practice before Saturday's pole qualifying.
