Briscoe tops Watkins Glen practice

Ryan Briscoe topped the final free practice session before qualifying for the Watkins Glen round of the IRL IndyCar Series

Penske driver Briscoe lapped in 1:29.5822 early in the second half of the split session, and had a comfortable 0.7sec margin over second-placed Scott Dixon (Ganassi), who is chasing a fourth straight win at the Glen and was quickest in Friday practice.

Andretti Green Racing's Tony Kanaan was quickest amongst the first group to take to the track, and was classified third overall on combined times.

The group one drivers had a disrupted half hour, with two stoppages in their session. The first came when an "embarrassed and frustrated" Graham Rahal crashed his Newman/Haas/Lanigan car at Turn 7 on his fourth lap, doing sufficient damage to put his participation in this afternoon's qualifying session in doubt.

Series returnee Mario Dominguez caused the second yellow when he ran out of fuel on track following a miscommunication with his Pacific Coast Motorsports team.

Dale Coyne Racing's Bruno Junqueira was also in trouble during the session, with a shock absorber problem forcing him to limp back to the pits.

Behind the top three, Danica Patrick was a promising fourth fastest for AGR, with Dixon's Ganassi teammate Dan Wheldon completing the top five ahead of KV Racing Technology driver Will Power and Rahal Letterman's Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Three-time Watkins Glen pole-winner Helio Castroneves was eighth in the second Penske Dallara-Honda.
