Briscoe believes he can win 500
Ryan Briscoe believes that he has a realistic chance of winning the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday despite it being a one-off appearance this year
The Australian is racing full-time in the American Le Mans Series with Penske Racing this season, but he also entered the biggest race on the IndyCar Series calendar.
Briscoe is racing for a team put together by Roger Penske's son Jay, and the squad are in the fortunate position of being able to use equipment from the reigning champions.
"To do the Indy 500 with a competitive car is any driver's dream one-off deal," Briscoe told autosport.com.
"It's great to be one of the dark horses, but I don't think it would be a miracle if we won the race.
"We are definitely up there and in the mix, and I've got the equipment that can fight for a win."
Briscoe added that while the Luczo Dragon team have been put together just for this race, he feels like he is driving for a veteran outfit.
"For a one-off team, we've been really well organised," he said. "It's like we've been doing it for years.
"We have a lot of experienced guys in this team who have been here before, so everything has been under control.
"Obviously we'll need a bit of luck to win, but so will everyone else. It would be amazing if we could actually do it."
Briscoe will start seventh for the race, and he is the only driver starting from one of the front three rows of the grid that doesn't drive for Penske, Ganassi, or Andretti Green.
