IndyCar announces panel to oversee New Hampshire result protest

IndyCar president of competition Brian Barnhart has revealed the identity of the panel called to hear the protests lodged by Newman/Haas and Ganassi against Ryan Hunter-Reay's victory in last week's controversial finish to the Indy 225 at New Hampshire

NH Motor Speedway general manager Jerry Gappens, USAC chairman Jeff Stoops and former USAC president Rollie Helmling will form the three-man committee that will rule on the protests on August 23.

Organisers declared Andretti Autosport's Hunter-Reay the winner of the race, but the two rival teams contested the result because their drivers Oriol Servia (Newman/Haas) and Scott Dixon (Ganassi) had passed the #28 machine on the final restart prior to the race being halted.

Controversy surrounded the event after that restart took place because some drivers and teams considered conditions to be too wet to go back to green.

The race was finally stopped for good when several cars lost control on that final restart - which was also when Hunter-Reay dropped to third.

The result was then declared based on the running order prior to the final restart - prompting the official protests.

Barnhart has subsequently apologised for allowing the race to go back to green, saying: "It was an error from the race control standpoint, and clearly my fault."
