Briscoe ahead in afternoon practice

Ryan Briscoe led a Penske one-two at the end of IndyCar's Friday practice in Long Beach

Andretti Autosport's Ryan Hunter-Reay had been in front going into the closing stages, but late quick laps from Briscoe and team-mate Will Power saw the Penske duo hit the front, 0.1482 seconds apart.

Scott Dixon was also quick for Ganassi, taking fourth behind Hunter-Reay with a time 0.2807s down on Briscoe. Dixon's reigning champion team-mate Dario Franchitti was outside the top 10 in both sessions today.

Alex Tagliani took Sam Schmidt Motorsports to an excellent fifth position, ahead of Penske's third driver Helio Castroneves, Andretti's Marco Andretti and a very strong eighth place for Foyt's Vitor Meira.

Justin Wilson had a few trips down run-off areas on the way to taking ninth for Dreyer & Reinbold, ahead of Newman/Haas' Oriol Servia.

The session saw two yellows, one so that James Jakes' Dale Coyne Racing car could be retrieved, and one for an early crash by returnee Paul Tracy, who put his Dragon Racing car into the Turn 5 wall on only his third lap of the session.
