Conway lands Andretti Autosport drive
Mike Conway has landed a full-time ride with Andretti Autosport when he returns from injury to begin the 2011 IndyCar Series
The 27-year-old has been recovering from a broken back sustained in a huge crash in the closing stages of the Indianapolis 500 last May. Now he joins Danica Patrick, Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay in the former title-winning squad, taking up the seat left open by Tony Kanaan's departure to De Ferran Dragon.
"This is a really exciting moment in my career to be racing for Andretti Autosport," said Conway. "It's going to be an honour working with some great people and great team-mates, and I can't wait to get started.
"Everyone is fired up, especially me, and I'm ready for the challenge ahead. I can't wait to hit the track and start achieving some great results."
Team owner Michael Andretti added that he was delighted to have signed Conway to the squad: "Mike is a great addition to our team, for sure. He is talented, has a lot of potential and should really fit in well with our team here.
"He was off to a good start last year and had started to show what he is really capable of in the IndyCar Series.
"He's got great credentials, has raced in some very competitive formulas and is a proven winner. We're really excited to be able to bring him to Andretti Autosport."
Conway previously drove for Dreyer & Reinbold in 2009 and '10, notching up 23 IndyCar starts and a best finish of third place during his rookie season at Sonoma.
He led 15 laps of last year's Indy 500 and was climbing through the field rapidly from ninth, on an aggressive fuel strategy when he collided with, ironically, Hunter-Reay's Andretti car - which had run out of fuel, ending his season.
