Rest of Texas IndyCar race postponed to August as rain hits again

The remainder of the Texas Motor Speedway IndyCar race has been postponed to August 27, after rain showers brought out the red flag on lap 71 of 248

The ninth round of the 2016 IndyCar season had already been pushed back to Sunday afternoon due to earlier wet weather on Saturday night.

Track drying delayed the Firestone 600 start slightly on Sunday, with Andretti Autosport driver and polesitter Carlos Munoz leading the way early on before the first round of green flag pitstops.

A heavy crash involving Conor Daly and Josef Newgarden then produced a considerable caution period.

Daly lost control at the exit of Turn 4 on lap 43 and collected Newgarden's car, which was tipped onto its side before hitting the barrier for a second time.

Daly escaped injury but Newgarden has been transported to hospital with injuries to his right shoulder and right wrist.

Drivers pitted during the caution period while the SAFER barrier was repaired and this mixed up the order.

James Hinchcliffe took over first place, with Ryan Hunter-Reay, Mikhail Aleshin, Will Power and Ed Carpenter next up.

However, heavy rain showers quickly swept over the circuit and caused the race to be red-flagged. It needed to reach the halfway mark for an official result to be cleared.

With a poor forecast for the rest of the night and the start of the week, and a congested calendar in this part of the season, IndyCar took the unusual decision to reschedule the race for later in the year but to pick up from where it had left off.

The remaining 177 laps will be run on August 27, taking place on the Saturday after the Pocono Raceway event.

The one-day event will feature a practice session before the race resumes with the current positions from lap 72.

The decision not to try to resume the race in the coming week also assists Scott Dixon, Sebastien Bourdais and Mikhail Aleshin, as they have to immediately travel to France to contest the Le Mans 24 Hours.
