IndyCar Texas: Josef Newgarden taken to hospital after crash
Josef Newgarden was taken to hospital with shoulder and wrist injuries after a serious crash with Conor Daly in the Texas Motor Speedway IndyCar race
The massive accident occurred on lap 42 of the rain-delayed event, beginning when the yet-to-pit Daly's Dale Coyne Racing Dallara-Honda got sideways coming out of Turn 4 and shot up the track into the path of Ed Carpenter Racing driver Newgarden's Dallara-Chevrolet.
Newgarden's car was pinned into the SAFER barrier cockpit first, sliding down the track on its side.
Daly was able to get out of the car and walk to the safety vehicle.
Newgarden was shaken and had to be helped from the car by the safety car. He then collapsed on the track after taking a few steps and was transferred by air to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas with a fractured right clavicle and a small fracture on his right hand.
"I'm banged up a little bit but I'm generally OK," said Newgarden.
"I am feeling a little pain but I hope to be ready to rock and go again soon.
"I feel bad for both Conor and myself but I'm glad Conor is OK as well.
"I'll be back out there fighting as soon as I can. Luckily I am all right, thank you again to everyone who helped me."
Daly added: "I was the rookie to make a mistake.
"I just didn't expect that slide at all. All of a sudden the rears just totally lost grip.
"It felt like I floated all the way through the corner. It was all my mistake and I should have recognised it.
"He's a tough kid; I grew up with him. I felt so bad.
"To ruin someone else's race is never cool."
During the extended caution period to repair barrier damage, AJ Foyt Racing crew member Marty Armstrong was struck by an air hose flicked up by Jack Hawksworth as he exited a pitstop. Armstrong received stitches in the track medical centre.
The race was subsequently red-flagged on lap 70 when a storm hit the area.
