Long Beach IndyCar: Scott Dixon leads practice for Ganassi
Scott Dixon led a Chip Ganassi Racing one-two in the opening practice session for this weekend's IndyCar race in Long Beach
In sunny, dry conditions far removed from the rain that pelted last weekend's race at NOLA, Dixon moved to the top for the first time 13 minutes into the session, and then made it his own by posting a 1m08.6458s lap 10 minutes before the end.
The driver that he displaced at the top was team-mate Tony Kanaan, however the Brazilian's 1m08.8076s effort was still good enough for him to hold on to second-fastest when the session came to an end.
Ryan Hunter-Reay was third-fastest for Andretti, with Penske's Will Power and Simon Pagenaud rounding out the top five.
The session passed largely without incident: BHA rookie Gabby Chaves had a moment at Turn 1 but was able to rejoin without damage or delay, and CFH Racing's Luca Filippi was able to get himself back to the pits under greens after clouting the wall in the final two minutes.
Rocky Moran Jr, who was a late-call up to replace Carlos Huertas in Dale Coyne Racing's #18 car, ran 20 laps in an effort to cram in as many miles as possible and finished up 2.4s off the pace, but 1.3s ahead of team-mate Francesco Dracone.
