Road America United SportsCar: Dalziel denies Westbrook pole

Ryan Dalziel snatched pole from Richard Westbrook with a final-lap effort in United SportsCar qualifying at Road America

Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP driver Westbrook had topped the majority of the Prototype session, chipping away at his benchmark time repeatedly and looking assured of pole in the car he shares with Michael Valiante.

But Dalziel kept pushing and a 1m55.166s lap after the chequered flag had fallen gave his Extreme Speed HPD LMP2 car the top spot by 0.321 seconds.

Dalziel will share the polesitting machine with Scott Sharp in Sunday's race.

Championship leaders Christian Fittipaldi and Joao Barbosa of Action Express start third, with their nearest rivals Ricky and Jordan Taylor fifth in the family Wayne Taylor Racing entry behind Olivier Pla and Gustavo Yacaman's OAK Morgan-Nissan.

The OAK car had crashed heavily in morning practice due to a suspension issue.

IndyCar frontrunner James Hinchcliffe could only manage 11th in the Starworks Riley-Honda on its return to the series.

John Edwards held off challenges from the SRT Vipers of Jonathan Bomarito and Marc Goossens to give BMW pole in GTLM.

Less than a second covered the top eight cars in the class, with championship leaders Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia at the tail of that group in their Corvette.

RSR took a one-two in PC qualifying with past and present IndyCar stars Bruno Junqueira and Jack Hawksworth, while Aston Martin will start on GTD pole thanks to TRG driver James Davison's efforts.
