US capital to stage ALMS round
The American Le Mans Series will head to Washington DC next year after series organisers and city officials announced a 10-year deal on Thursday to stage a race in the US capital from 2002
The Grand Prix of Washington will be held on a 1.7-mile temporary road racing circuit in the Robert F Kennedy Memorial Stadium on July 19-21, next year.
"Professional racing showcases some of the world's greatest cities: Melbourne, Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Montreal," said city mayor Anthony A Williams. "I'm proud that Washington DC is a member of that group. We're an ideal city where racing enthusiasts to spend the weekend."
The showpiece event of the weekend will be the three-hour ALMS race held on the Sunday, but details of the whole support package have yet to be announced.
"This is a tremendous development for the American Le Mans Series and motorsports in general," commented Scott Atherton, president and chief operating officer for Panoz Motorsports Group, which includes the ALMS. "This event will showcase our series to the world from our nation's capital."
