Silverstone: Duez/Babini's shock win

Marc Duez and Fabio Babini were the surprise winners of the second round of the FIA GT Championship at Silverstone on Saturday evening, the Belmondo Chrysler Viper pairing inheriting the win as many of the more fancied runners hit trouble

Opening round winner Jamie Campbell-Walter raced away into the lead at the start and built up a healthy lead, but Lister's plans for a repeat victory were scuppered when a fuel filler failed to work properly at the first pit stop. Co-driver Nicolaus Springer then flat-spotted a tyre as he tried to catch up, and the car eventually finished a lap down in fourth.

The race had seven leaders, but Duez and Babini were there when it mattered to fend off a late charge from the second Lister of Bobby Verdon-Roe, which was recovering after BV-R clashed with the Carsport Holland Viper of Fabrizio Gollin at Stowe which caused both to spin. Verdon-Roe's co-driver, Paul Knapfield, also had a couple of spins, but the duo were denied a chance of victory when the car incurred a misfire on the final lap and only just made the finish.

The Larbre Viper of Christophe Bouchut, David Terrien and Vincent Vosse finished third, despite an off by Terrien at Becketts and gearbox problems.

The JMB Racing Ferrari 360 of Christian Pescatori/Andrea Montermini won the N-GT class, ahead of the Porsche 996 of autosport.com columnist Johnny Mowlem/Toto Wolff.
