Qualifying: Kristensen on pole
Tom Kristensen, looking to break a year-long winless streak in the American Le Mans Series, took pole position for Sunday's Road America 500, the inaugural event for the sportscar racing series at the four-mile track.
Driving an Audi R8 for Audi Sport Team Joest, Kristensen turned a lap of
1m52.166s (128.381mph), fastest of the 30 cars that will start the race. Kristensen, the series point leader after three of 10 rounds, has won poles and led races but hasn't won a race in the series since July of 2001 at Sears Point Raceway. The Dane will co-drive with Rinaldo Capello.
Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela, who co-drove with Kristensen to their third straight win in the 24 Hours of Le Mans last month, will start second in the same Audi that won at Le Mans, with David Brabham and Jan Magnussen starting third in a Panoz LMP-1.
Despite an engine that skipped on his flying lap, Jon Field qualified fifth-fastest overall and led the LMP675 class for smaller prototypes. His Lola EX257-AER MG was clocked at 1m54.909 (125.317 mph). Field will share the car with Duncan Dayton and Michael Durand, a trio that tasted success by winning the LMP675 class in the 12 Hours of Sebring in March.
Canada's Ron Fellows continued his domination of qualifying in the GTS class, winning his fourth pole in the four ALMS races this season, and Lucas Luhr won his first pole of the season in the GT class.
