Panoz steals Petit victory from BMW

The Panoz squad has stolen victory in the 1999 Petit Le Mans race from BMW after Jorg Muller threw away victory just three laps from the finish

Muller had passed Panoz LMP Roadster S driver Eric Bernard in the final stint of the 1000- mile race, but lost it when he threw the BMW V12 LMR into a graveltrap almost within sight of the chequered flag.

'I saw Jorg in the gravel and thought, 'If I'm not careful that could be me,' said Bernard on the podium at Road Atlanta.

Second place went to the BMW V12 LMR driven by Steve Soper, Bill Auberlen and Jo Winkelhock, who came home a lap behind.

Muller and team-mate JJ Lehto salvaged third place at the chequered, but it was a poor result for their massive effort throughout the race.

The GTS class was a Viper whitewash. The red and white cars finished first, second and third in class.

Olivier Beretta, Karl Wendinger and Marc Duez took class victory. They finished in ninth place overall, 37 laps adrift of the overall winner.

The GT class win went to Cort Wagner, Dirk Muller and Sascha Maassen in the Manthey Racing Porsche 911 GT3. They finished 15th overall and 47 laps adrift.
