Honda Super GT deal for McLaren Formula 1 test driver Oliver Turvey

McLaren Formula 1 test and development driver Oliver Turvey will race for the Dome Honda team in Super GT this season

The 27-year-old, who won the LMP2 class at last year's Le Mans 24 Hours with the Jota Sport Zytek squad, will drive a Honda NSX CONCEPT-GT in the Japanese-based championship together with Takashi Kogure.

Turvey explained that he had made an approach to Honda through McLaren after its F1 tie-up with the Japanese manufacturer was announced.

"I asked if there might be any opportunities in Super GT and Honda was keen on my going over there to have a test, which I did at Suzuka in December," Turvey told AUTOSPORT.

"I'm really excited about this: the championship is very strong and the cars are great fun to drive."

The deal follows a season during which Turvey only raced once, when he was called up during Le Mans week to drive Jota's Zytek-Nissan Z11SN.

He was signed to contest the full World Endurance Championship with the Delta-run Millennium ORECA P2 squad, which never made it onto the grid after a series of funding issues.

Turvey said that he hoped to race at Le Mans for a third time this year, but had no potential deals on the table.

He revealed that he still had long-term ambitions to race in LMP1 at the 24 Hours.

"I'd love to win Le Mans outright in the future and a lot of successful sportscar drivers have come through Super GT," he said.

Honda has reshuffled its Super GT line-up for 2015: Kogure moves from Team Kunimitsu to Dome; Naoki Yamamoto switches from Dome to partner Kosuke Matsuura at Aguri; and Hideki Mutoh goes from Kunimitsu to Real Racing.

The Dome team will contest the series on Bridgestone tyres rather than the Michelins it has used for the past two seasons.
