Herbert returns to ALMS
Johnny Herbert is set to return to the Champion Audi team with which he raced in the ALMS in 2001-2003. The Briton is likely to drive an R8 for the team at the series' finale at Laguna Seca in October, according to this week's Autosport magazine
Team boss Dave Maraj commented: "I'm sure Johnny will be with me at Laguna." Herbert said: "It will be nice go back and have a bit of fun in a one-off. I'm pretty sure it is going to happen at Laguna."
The deal could well lead to a full-time drive for Herbert with the team in 2005. Maraj wants to expand his team from one to two cars next year and his plan to run Herbert in an extra car alongside regulars JJ Lehto and Marco Werner at Laguna is part of the preparation for that.
"I don't want to turn up with two cars for the first time at Sebring next year," said Maraj. "I want to do Laguna Seca as a dry-run."
It's not yet clear who Herbert's co-driver at Laguna Seca will be, but Maraj wants someone with R8 experience and will be contacting Audi Sport to check who might be available.
