FIA GTs: Victory for Campbell-Walter

Jamie Campbell-Walter took the British Lister marque to a convincing win in the opening round of the FIA GT Championship at Magny-Cours today (Sunday)

The Briton led away from pole position at the start of the three-hour race and built a gap to reigning champion Christophe Bouchut in his Larbre Chrysler Viper. But when he handed the Storm over to partner Nicolaus Springer, the car slipped down the order.

Bouchut's partner David Terrien and Carsport Holland's Mike Hezemans demoted Springer, but the Lister team had come up with a strong strategy to take back the lead. Springer completed a short stint and handed the car back to Campbell-Walter with more than an hour still to run.

It meant that the Briton would have to make a late stop for fuel, but he had time to build a lead of nearly a minute. Campbell-Walter was thus able to stop with 20 minutes to go, refuel and come back out with his lead intact.

"It's an unbelievable result," said Campbell-Walter. "This is a hat trick for us at this track. It all went according to plan, but I didn't expect to win."

Hezeman and partner Anthony Kumpen took second place ahead of Bouchut and Terrien.

JMB Racing claimed the N-GT category honours with Christian Pescatori and Andrea Montemini driving their Ferrari 360 Modena. They were handed the win when the Freisinger Motorsport Porsche, which was first across the line in N-GT, was excluded. The car, driven by Ni Amorim and Stephane Ortelli was found to have a fuel tank irregularity.
