FIA GT Qual 2: Gounon takes pole
Jean-Marc Gounon took his first pole position since 1999 with an inspired performance in the one-shot superpole qualifying session for the penultimate round of the FIA GT Championship at Donington Park
The former Minardi and Simtek F1 driver set a time of 1m28.982s in his BMS Scuderia Italia Ferrari 550 Maranello, beating fastest qualifier Jamie Campbell-Walter into second place by nearly half-a-second.
"I had a good, clean lap with no real problems," said Campbell-Walter. "I was a bit cautious in the Grand Prix loop and braked a little early. The main thing is we are on the front row ahead of the guys were competing against for the championship."
Third place went to Jean-Denis Deletraz, sharing his Ferrari with Andrea Piccini. The pair need victory if they are to head into the final round with a shot at the title, but have not won since taking three consecutive wins in the middle of the season.
Former BTCC driver Bobby Verdon-Roe qualified sixth in the Lister Storm that he will share with David Warnock, while the Carsport Holland Chrysler Vipers of Fabrizio Gollin/Luca Cappellari and Mike Hezemans/Anthony Anthony Kumpen start fourth and fifth.
In the NGT class, Antonio Garcia will start from pole after setting a time of 1m34.674s, less than a tenth of a second clear of Robin Liddell in the EMKA Porsche. Stephane Ortelli, who can seal the NGT title to go with his recently acquired Porsche Supercup crown, was third after making a mistake at the Melbourne Hairpin.
