FIA GT offers financial help to teams
The FIA GT Championship has announced a package of financial support to help its teams during the global economic crisis
A 600,000 euro fund will be provided to assist teams committing to the full 2009 season, with 24 cars each receiving 25,000 euros towards their costs.
Stephane Ratel, head of FIA GT organiser SRO, hopes the measures will help maintain full fields in this year's championship.
"In the context of an unprecedented economic slowdown, it was essential to find resources in order to contribute to the budget of the teams, and to help to secure grids similar to those seen in recent seasons of the FIA GT Championships," said Ratel.
"This is the first time that such a large budget will be awarded to GT teams in Europe and the proof that, despite the difficult economic environment, SRO is continuing to build up GT racing into an increasingly professional sport."
SRO will also award 150,000 euros to the leading Michelin tyre user in the supporting GT3 Championship, plus 40 sets of Michelins to help the driver graduate to FIA GTs in 2010.
