Belgian team to run second Ford GT1
Belgian squad Marc VDS Racing has announced it will run a Ford GT1 in this year's FIA GT Championship
The new Ford has been built by Matech Racing in preparation for next season's planned GT1 World Championship. Last week Matech confirmed that its own car would be ready to join the field for the Silverstone season-opener and hinted that there would be at least one customer machine alongside it.
VDS has recently run a Gillet Vertigo in the G2 invitation class for former Minardi Formula 1 test driver Bas Leinders and Renaud Kuppens. The Belgian pair will stay on board for the move to GT1.
"The appeal of the Ford is not only the enormous potential of the GT1 version, but also the fact that the car is being developed with the new 2010 rules in mind," said Leinders.
"We will use the season as preparation for 2010. That does not mean that we will be doomed to fulfil the role of backmarkers, far from it, but everything we do will have a positive effect on our 2010 campaign.
"That is not the case for all of our competitors, since they are driving cars which are at the end of their development."
