Zanardi disappointing on comeback
Alex Zanardi's CART comeback got off to a faltering start in Mexico, as the former double champion retired after a series of incidents
Only 22nd on the grid after several problems in practice, the Italian tangled with Ganassi's Bruno Junqueira on the first lap. He survived that incident, then vaulted to tenth after changing his strategy, only to spin shortly after a restart while battling wheel-to-wheel with Michael Andretti.
Zanardi was restarted by the CART safety team and resumed a lap down, but would retire after colliding with Shinji Nakano while fighting his way back through the field.
"It was just a lack of patience and a little bit of bad luck," he said afterwards. "Mainly I should have been more patient. I wish to apologise to the whole Mo Nunn Racing team. This is not the kind of start we were looking to have. But now it's part of the past and we have to move forward."
Tony Kanaan brightened Mo Nunn Racing's day by finishing a competitive seventh in the team's second Reynard-Honda.
