Wilson wants better race pace
Justin Wilson wants his RSPORTS team to work on their race pace after he lost last weekend's Portland event despite building up an 18-second lead in the opening stages
The Briton had dominated the dry qualifying session and pulled away from the field in the opening laps, but was hunted down and passed by Sebastien Bourdais in the final stages, eventually finishing 13 seconds behind the champion.
"The first stint for us was working really well. I was just cruising along, really," said Wilson.
"I was very comfortable with the car; it felt really good to drive.
"Then the second stint, I was expecting to pick up the pace but it never happened. I was a little bit surprised at that. But, you know, ultimately we weren't quite quick enough.
"Sebastien just slowly ate away at my lead and eventually after the second pit stop he managed to get by me.
"We've got some work to do to make sure that we're competitive in the race situation. But at least we know qualifying is a lot better for us."
Wilson's Portland result moved him up to fifth in the championship after a difficult start to his season with the reconstituted team.
His teammate Alex Tagliani briefly ran third early on, but ultimately finished fifth. He agreed that the team need to find more consistent pace.
"I think there is a couple of little improvements that we need to make here and there just to make our runs a little more consistent and I think when we can do that, we will be much more ahead," he said.
