VW builds 'racer' for white van man

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has built a one-off Caddy TDI Racer, a modified van for the track. The machine currently has a tuned version of VW's 90bhp 1.9-litre direct injection diesel engine, producing 130bhp, and plans to uprate it to over 200bhp are under way. The machine has been built with help from Volkswagen Racing, and should reach 60mph in around 5.5 seconds and hit a 140mph top speed when the engine work is complete. VW says it has no plans (yet) to race the van

To hit the 200 bhp mark, the current engine will be modified to include variable turbine geometry, larger versions of the intercooler, pump and injectors, and a reprogrammed electronic control unit.

The most testing task so far has been to fit a welded-in roll cage into the shell of the Caddy, to meet competition regulations.

The Caddy will be tested at racetracks across the country, and will appear at motoring and racing events throughout the year. For details of where to see the Caddy TDI racer, contact the Volkswagen Racing team on 01908 210088.
