Vietoris becomes youngest winner

Christian Vietoris became A1GP's youngest ever winner when he took victory in the feature race at Taupo, New Zealand yesterday

The German, who was 18 years, nine months, and 19 days old, beat the record of his countryman Nico Hulkenberg by exactly five months. Hulkenberg won on his debut in the series at Zandvoort in 2006.

Vietoris said: "I didn't think this would happen before I came here, it's fantastic.

"We were only a few tenths off on Friday and improved the car all weekend. We did a really good job in the feature race and the team made fantastic pitstops."

With Michael Ammermuller also winning a round for Team Germany at Zhuhai, China last month, the nation has set a record for having three different drivers stand on the top step of the podium.

Team Germany boss Willi Weber is pleased that his decision to put Vietoris in the car after Ammermuller won the previous round was vindicated: "This is great, and it shows our driver choice was right," he said.

Back-to-back victories for Germany in China and New Zealand have lifted them to fourth in the standings, 17 points behind series leader Team New Zealand.
