Vasser takes US500 pole

Jimmy Vasser has an excellent chance to turn his season around, starting from pole position for the US500 at Michigan

The Ganassi driver hasn't won since Fontana in November 1998, but returned to form on the awesome superspeedway where he took victory in 1996. Patrick Racing's Adrian Fernandez pushed him hard but had to abandon his qualifying run after nearly crashing, while championship leader Juan Montoya starts 3rd for his first ever 500-mile Superspeedway race.

The Arciero-Wells cars are flying this weekend, Toyota looking good on the faster tracks these days. Scott Pruett, winner here in 1995, starts 5th, his rookie team mate Christiano da Matta is 10th. The order is otherwise fairly predictable, although Greg Moore will be gutted to start way back in 21st position. Also notable is that the two Penskes are alongside each other, Al Unser Jr and new recruit Alex Barron qualifying 17th and 18th.
