V8Star Nurburgring: Cecotto wins
Johnny Cecotto was a comfortable winner of the V8Star round at the Nurburgring. From his first pole position of the season he briefly lost the lead at the start, but by the end of the first lap he was back in front - a position he held to the flag
The ex-F1 driver was followed home by another former grand prix star, Portugal's Pedro Lamy. The place could have gone to Thomas Mutsch who produced a cracking drive. A lack of laps in qualifying meant the 23-year-old had to start from the back of the grid, but a series of daring overtaking moves saw him rise up to second place.
However, his was tipped into a spin by Steffen Widmann, which cost him a chance of a podium finish. Mutsch's misfortune was Kris Nissen's gain and the German, who was celebrating his 42nd birthday, took third.
Cecotto now leads the championship with 180 points, 13 ahead of Robert Lechner, Mutsch is a further two points adrift in third, while Lamy is now fifth on 160. Roland Asch on 162 holds fourth.
