Rockingham to help German ChampCar fans

Britain's Rockingham Motor Speedway is already working with CART to bring German fans to its Rockingham 500 ChampCar race on the weekend of September 13-14, in the wake of the cancellation of the German 500 at EuroSpeedway Lausitz. Contrary to an implication in our report yesterday, Rockingham has sold all but 12 of 58 hospitality suites for its event, and over half the seats in one of its biggest grandstands in the past fortnight alone

"I feel very sorry for all the team at EuroSpeedway Lausitz" said Rockingham CEO David Grace. "I know from our own experience just how hard they will have worked to try to make the race a success. It's a tragedy that the German government officials were unable to offer financial support to this world-class event. On the brighter side, as the sole venue in Europe this year for the fastest racing in the world, we're already making plans with CART and EuroSpeedway to be able to welcome many of the German race fans to Rockingham instead."

The inaugural 2002 FedEx Championship Series fixture on the banked 1.5-mile oval near Corby, Northamptonshire, attracted over 42,000 spectators, and advance bookings are running ahead of the equivalent date last year. The venue is considering the creation of additional corporate hospitality facilities to meet continuing demand.
