Third session: Alesi out of top 10
At the end of Friday's pair of free practice sessions, Jean Alesi had rewarded Eddie Jordan's faith with the sixth fastest time of the day, six spots ahead of his team mate Jarno Trulli. Frentzen, too, had got off to a team mate-beating start, putting in a time good enough for 14th overall
This is what happened in the 45-minute long session three...
With relatively few runners out, Frentzen goes second quickest with a 1m19.434s, then betters that with a 1m18.998s. Returns to the pits with seven laps completed.
Alesi heads out on first proper run (both drivers had completed installation laps at the start of the session) and manages to take the fourth slot with a 1m18.720s lap. Returns to the Jordan pit with four laps under his belt.
Frentzen heads back out and lowers his own mark to 1m18.927s, then 1m18.786s. But with most cars having attempted runs, the time is good enough only for 16th overall. Returns to the pits with 13 laps completed and has in-car conference with engineers, where it is decided to lower the ride height and adjust the front wing to improve front end bite.
Alesi back out for short run, but knocks his best time down to 1m17.726s. Completes nine laps in total.
Frentzen does a short run to test front wing changes. Doesn't improve on his time. Returns to the pits with 15 laps completed.
