Soucek sets pace in Donington test

Formula 2 championship leader Andy Soucek set the fastest time of Tuesday's official test at Donington Park

Soucek sets pace in Donington test

The Spaniard set his best time of 1m23.053s in the final minutes of the last afternoon session to move well clear of the pack at the top of the timesheet.

"Today was a good day, we made progress with the car and came away with a very good time compared to the rest of the field," said Soucek. "We tried a lot of things with the set-up and finally ended up with a great car - but there is still work to do.

"It wasn't really a surprise to set such a good time as we were very quick in the morning on old tyres, but for sure it's not going to be as comfortable for me at the weekend. Everything can still change, but today gives me a lot of confidence before the races and hopefully I can extend my championship lead."

Milos Pavlovic set the second quickest time of the test on his final flying lap of the day, nearly three tenths of a second behind Soucek. Julian Jousse finished up third ahead of Edoardo Piscopo, Mikhail Aleshin and Carlos Iaconelli.

Soucek's nearest title challenger Robert Wickens was only 14th fastest, while fellow race winners Tobias Hegewald and Philipp Eng were 11th and 15th.

The one-time Schumacher rival rebooting his career Down Under

Joey Mawson made waves in the middle of the last decade, beating future Haas Formula 1 driver Mick Schumacher - among other highly-rated talents - to the 2016 German F4 title. A run in F1's feeder GP3 category only caused his career to stall, but now back in Australia Mawson's S5000 title success has set that to rights
