Shepherd quick in Saxo
"I was considering cancelling my entry because we only had it running on the dyno on Thursday, and put the finishing touches to it on Saturday," said Shepherd, who built the car from a new shell at his Shepherd Motors business in Chelmsford
Driving it for the first time in qualifying, Shepherd tacked on to defending champion Paul Taylor's Peugeot 106 and lapped quickest in the session, and third overall.
"Apart from being easier to drive, it didn't feel too dissimilar from my old Fiesta [in which he won a Snetterton round last season]," said Shepherd. "It brakes a bit better, due to discs all round and bigger wheels, but the increased weight limit of 930kg, with driver, introduced this year for the newer cars, hurts us a bit."
Shepherd made a flying start from row two, and got ahead of front row men Gareth Wright and Peter Felix in their Peugeot 106s by Gerards.
"On the back straight, they blew past me," said Shepherd, "so there is work to be done on the exhaust. Getting second back from Felix on the line was an unexpected bonus."
